Twice the Space - Twice the Treasures!

     Lucky's Attic Thrift Shoppe recently more-than-doubled in size by moving to the space across from the Goodwill Store and Chinese Buffet Restaurant.
     No more crowded aisles! No more cramped displays! Just thousands of square feet of gently used, donated merchandise -- from fine jewelry to sleeper sofas.
     There are now more bargains than ever … and just in time for Christmas!
     Lucky's is operated by Animal Friends volunteers in the Mountaineer Mall on Greenbag Road.
     The Shoppe accepts donations of everything except clothes, shoes, and - due to a federal regulation - toys and baby items.
                         Shoppe hours are:
           Tuesday, 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.;
           Thursday, 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.;
           Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.;
           Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
     All merchandise is donated; all clerks are volunteers; and all proceeds support Animal Friends' no-kill animal sanctuary on Brewer Road.
     To volunteer, contact Shoppe manager Kathy Orosz at 304-290-0161. The Shoppe number is 304-291-5825.

Dogs Beat Summer Heat with Romp in Pool

     Imagine a pool full of canines with smiles on their faces as they splashed around with their owners. That was the scene at the annual Splash Bash - a Dog Day in the Pool - on August 30, with almost 500 folks and more than 350 dogs participating. See photos on our website!
     Special thanks to O.J. White Transfer & Storage for paying the Marilla Pool rental fee and to the following for their tremendous support: Mark Jones, who donated his time to clipping nails and donated all proceeds to Animal Friends; Brent Armstrong, emcee extraordinaire; Alliance Realty, Dog Tags, Hillcrest Veterinary Clinic, Masman Jewelers, PETCO, Woofs; and all the wonderful volunteers who worked so hard to ensure a successful event.

Weldon, Petfinder and County Grants Received

     Animal Friends recently received $1,000 from the Weldon Family Foundation, administered through the BB&T Financial Management Division. Many thanks to the grant review committee for their support. The money helps us provide necessary, and costly, veterinary services - to assure that our Sanctuary animals are healthy for adoption.
     Thanks to our Petfinder coordinator, Debra Tennant, Animal Friends applied for a Petfinder Emergency Generator Grant and was awarded a Honda Generator. The generator will be used in partnership with the American Red Cross's Emergency Disaster Readiness Plan.
     Thanks, too, to the Monongalia County Commission for a $1,000 grant to assist with animal transport expenses. At least once a month, Animal Friends transports animals from kill shelters to other states where there is actually a shortage of healthy animals available for adoption, saving many lives each year.

Got a New Puppy? Talk to Your Vet about Parvovirus

     Canine parvovirus is a serious gastrointestinal disease of dogs, frequently attacking puppies younger than one year old. As many as 50% of infected puppies die from the disease if not diagnosed and treated immediately.
     A puppy can be vaccinated against the parvovirus, usually just referred to as "parvo," beginning at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Then booster vaccinations should be given every 3 to 4 weeks until the puppy is 16 to 18 weeks old.
     The virus is extremely contagious and can be spread when your puppy comes into contact with the feces of an infected dog. The virus can remain infectious on feces on the ground for 5 months or more.
     Parvo strikes rapidly, and symptoms can vary; but if you notice any of the following, call your veterinarian immediately:
  • Lack of appetite
  • Lethargy or listlessness
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Abdominal distention or discomfort
  • Signs of dehydration
  • Bloody and/or profuse diarrhea
The best thing to do is to discuss parvo prevention, diagnosis, and treatment with your veterinarian as soon as you get your new puppy. Vaccination is very effective against this life-threatening disease.
