Every year, more than 8,500 pets are destroyed in our area because there are not enough homes for all of them. Animal Friends of NCWV works to save as many of these animals as possible.

Many of the animals come from the pound where they face euthanasia. Some are referred from agencies like hospice and the Red Cross when animals are displaced due to the owner's illness, death, or other family crisis. Still others have been abused or neglected.

Here's how the program works; local residents volunteer to serve as foster parents to a litter of kittens, puppies, an adult dog or cat. The program covers the cost of veterinary care while in the foster parent's care. All animals receive vaccinations and are heartworm, feline aids, and leuk tested. We also spay and neuter prior to adoption.

The foster parent provides a temporary home until permanent homes are found. The intent is to integrate the animal into a normal, loving environment, which ensures a smooth transition into the permanent home, and makes for a more well-balanced pet. The foster parent provides food for the animal and litter, except when there are veterinary-assigned diets. Foster parents work with the volunteer staff to advertise the pets and screen for potential permanent homes.

When you adopt through our foster parenting program, you not only save an animal, you also get a loving pet that is grateful to have the second chance that you offer. And adopting from our program is also beneficial to you because you can be assured that the animals were part of a loving home where they received the care and attention they deserved. These factors make for a wonderful family pet!
