Duke is "Poster Child" for 2nd Annual Community Contributions Campaign

dog Duke

Pictured here, Duke is a redbone coonhound/ bloodhound mix believed to be approximately 10 years old. When Duke came to Animal Friends from an unsatisfactory rescue effort in another county, his eyes were badly infected, and he was believed to be blind. He has responded well to medical treatment, and he is ready to become part of a loving family.
You may have seen Duke's picture in The Dominion Post on Sunday, May 10, along with an article about Animal Friends' 2nd Annual Community Contributions Campaign. The Campaign continues through the end of June.
What is the money used for? In 2008 alone, Animal Friends cared for more than 220 animals at its no-kill sanctuary until permanent, loving homes could be found for them. Such care involves considerable expense -- pet food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, medications, veterinary care, utility bills, vehicle operation, and maintenance of the sanctuary building itself.
Since its founding in 2001, Animal Friends has found "forever homes" for more than 1,200 animals from at least four different counties in north-central West Virginia.
Animal Friends is appealing to former contributors and the general public again this year to help with expenses. A $20 annual contribution - a little more than a nickel a day - can make a huge difference in the health and welfare of an abandoned pet on its way to a new life.
Please help by sending a check along with the form.

Splash Bash Is Scheduled for August 30

So what if it's only June? It's never too early to start thinking about fun with your dog - or dogs! -- at Animal Friends' annual "Dog Day in the Pool" on Sunday, August 30, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Marilla Pool.
This community event - sponsored this year by O. J. White Transfer & Storage - was attended by more than 200 dogs and their owners last year. It has become a favorite for those looking to spend some quality time in the pool with their pooch.
For everyone's safety, all dogs must be on a leash -- no retractable leashes or pronged collars.
Admission is by donation, and all proceeds benefit our No-Kill Sanctuary. Please join in for day of fun, prizes and a tail- wagging good time!

Lucky's Attic Welcomes Trash-to-Treasure

It is said that one person's trash is another person's treasure, and many loyal customers find treasures every week at Lucky's Attic Thrift Shoppe, operated by Animal Friends volunteers in the Mountaineer Mall on Greenbag Road.
The Shoppe accepts donations of everything except clothes, purses, shoes, and - due to a new federal regulation - toys and baby items.
To drop off merchandise, look for the sign in the corner to the left of the Goodwill store. Arrangements can also be made for large items to be picked up at your home.
     Lucky's Attic store hours are:
           Tuesday and Thursday, 11:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.;       Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 6 p.m.;       Saturday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
If you can spare a few hours a week on a good cause that is also fun, the Shoppe could use volunteers to help clean donated items and set up displays. Someone with a truck who could pick up furniture once a month would also be greatly appreciated!
To volunteer, contact Shoppe manager Kathy Orosz at 304-290-0161. The Shoppe number is 304-291-5825.

Summer Heat Can Kill

It takes only minutes for a pet left in a vehicle on a warm day to succumb to heatstroke and suffocation.
On a 78-degree day, temperatures in a car parked in the shade can exceed 90 degrees -- and hit a scorching 160 degrees if parked in the sun!
Even when the outside air temperature is in the 60s, temperatures inside some vehicles can reach the danger zone on bright, sunny days.
Animals are not able to sweat like humans do. Dogs cool themselves by panting and by sweating through their paws. If they have only overheated air to breathe, animals can collapse, suffer brain damage, and possibly die of heatstroke.
Just 15 minutes can be enough for an animal's body temperature to climb from normal to deadly levels that can damage the nervous and cardiovascular systems, often leaving the animal comatose, dehydrated, and at risk of permanent impairment -- or death.

How To Help A Stray Dog

If you find a stray dog along a highway, or one shows up at your home, use EXTREME caution when approaching it. Some dogs will hop into your car immediately and expect to go for a ride. Some will be timid and need coaxing. Some will bite, since they are frightened and nervous about being lost in the first place.
Once you have the dog secured, call or take it to your local animal shelter immediately so the owner can be notified to pick it up. Usually, an animal pound allows dog owners to visit the pound to see if the dog is actually theirs. Then they must provide proof of vaccinations before they can remove the dog from the pound.
Sometimes a dog owner is fined for letting a dog run loose. This drives home the message that in the interest of public safety, dog owners must keep control of their animals.
If a dog's owner is not found, the dog becomes a ward of the county and can be offered for adoption, if deemed appropriate. There is no guarantee that a dog at the pound will find a new home, but at least it has a chance for adoption and is housed, fed and watered daily.
The best idea: Be a caring, responsible dog owner and don't let your dog become a stray.
